Football Squares - Alternative Winning Approaches
Below are the most commonly used variations of ways to win when playing football squares (or super bowl squares). Adding additional criteria around 'winning' squares is a lot of enjoyment for players since it provides variations outside of ONLY having the correct last number of the score per team. You can add these variations so that more people can win in different ways.
Score after specific period/quarter and final score:
To identify the winner at each of these periods of the format, simply take the score, look at last number of each and find where those 2 numbers intersect on the grid. That square is winner. This would be done for whichever periods you want to declare a winner. Normally the half-time and final score would pay the most to the winners.
REVERSE score After specific period/quarter and final score:
This is identical the the previous, however, you invert the numbers to the opposite team. For example if team A has 11 and team B has 22, instead of finding 1 for team A and 2 for team b and finding the intersection, you would instead use 2 for team A and 1 for team B.
Standard or reverse at 2 minute warnings:
You can add 1-2 additional points in time during the format to have additional winners. You can check the scores for standard and reverse at the 2 minute warning before half and the 2 minute warning before the end of the format.
Final score or score at end of regulation
It is most common to have a payout for the final score (i.e. including overtime), however, some choose to include both the end of regulation time as well as the final score, or choose end of regulation as the winning score to use.
Top, right, bottom, left Touching:
Another cool way to add additional winners. You can add 4 additional (normally smaller percentage winners) for having one of the 4 squares that is directly touching the winning score. If the winning square is on an edge, the touching square would be the square on the opposite side.
